The Integrative Medicine Center

The Integrative Medicine Center at Griffin Hospital (IMC) is located within the Center for Cancer Care.  The Integrative Medicine Center offers a variety of complementary and holistic therapies to assist in reducing symptoms and promoting healing.  The Integrative Medicine Center's team of physicians, nurse practitioners, and naturopathic physicians collaborate to develop individualized treatment plans for cancer patients.

The Integrative Medicine Center at Griffin Hospital provides complementary therapies to patients undergoing conventional treatment. Our goal is to assist healing the whole patient, with therapies not widely available in most cancer centers. Treatment plans are co-developed by the patient and a team of five specialists–MDs trained in internal and preventive medicine, a nurse practitioner and two naturopathic physicians with expertise in a wide range of natural, complementary and alternative therapies. Recommendations are based on patient preferences and healthcare goals, and informed by new and evolving research.

Holistic therapies help minimize the side effects of cancer treatment with strategies for controlling pain, maintaining weight, increasing energy and strengthening immune function. We can also provide dietary advice regarding nutritional and herbal supplements, with an emphasis on synergistic benefits and avoiding interactions with conventional therapies. Other aspects of treatment include stress reduction through acupuncture, meditation, imagery and breathing techniques.

Recovery and Survivorship

Nurturing and support are essential to cancer recovery. We offer dietary guidance, wellness counseling and recommendations for the ongoing use of complementary therapies as needed. Social health and emotional matters are also important to well-being. We offer a number of mind/body therapies to support patients in these areas.

Cancer Prevention

We offer individualized recommendations to reduce cancer risk. These take into account family history, genetic factors, lifestyle practices and environment. We counsel people with and without known risk factors, including the family members of Center patients, to help them lead healthier lives. Counseling covers lifestyle, diet, nutritional supplementation and other preventive and complementary alternatives.
